St. Josephine Bakhita, pray for us

Saint Josephine Margaret Bakhita was born around 1869 in Darfur, Sudan, into a prosperous Daju family before being kidnapped by Arab slave traders at age eight. Over the next 12 years, she was sold and traded more than a dozen times, enduring severe abuse—including ritual scarification that left her with 114 scars. Her suffering continued until she was purchased by the Italian Vice Consul, who treated her kindly and brought her to Italy. There, she was placed in the care of the Canossian Sisters, where she learned about Christianity and found peace in her faith. When her mistress tried to reclaim her, the Italian courts ruled that she had been unlawfully enslaved and declared her free.

Choosing to devote her life to God, Josephine joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity, taking her final vows in 1896. Known for her kindness, humility, and radiant joy, she spent over four decades serving as a cook, doorkeeper, and spiritual mentor. Despite the pain of her past, she expressed gratitude for her hardships, saying they led her to Christ. She died in 1947, and after a long canonization process, she was declared a saint in 2000 by Pope John Paul II. Today, Saint Josephine Bakhita is honored as the patron saint of Sudan, a symbol of forgiveness, resilience, and faith, and the patron saint of victims and survivors of human trafficking.

Gainz4Good leads novenas to St. Josephine, asking for her assistance.
